Jiwe - Halfway House

`Halfway House’ a Stepping Stone – in Kiswahili, Jiwe la kuvukia!

Within our plot, fully walled and secured; we completed our halfway house. This is primarily for children growing up from the children’s home, as a stepping stone to independence, but it is be big enough to accommodate others too.

Originally, we planned just a few rooms but once the plot was secured we saw its size and potential. Making the most of the plot, we’ve designed a two-storey building with twenty four rooms (each 3m x 3.5m) and two toilet blocks.

The first to move in were 5 young people from our home who have all finished at Tumaini High School and are over 18 years old. There was a lot of excitement as the younger children from the home helped the older ones move their stuff after they had enthusiastically searched through our container for useful household goods. Thanks to Footsteps International we were able to give each young person a budget to buy essential items for setting up home and it was really interesting to see what was important to each of them, one buying floor covering while another bought nice bed linen, as well as the usual pots, pans, plates and spoons!

Thanks once again to all of you who have made this possible. It’s hard to put into words how much this means to all those who will be living there. As I write this already all the upstairs rooms are occupied and 2 rooms downstairs – looks like we might need to go for a 2nd Storey!!!
