Restored to Give Back: David’s Journey from Orphaned Boy to Community Builder

David Muthama came to Tumaini more than ten years ago. Alongside his sisters and young cousin, David needed a place to stay while his mother underwent treatment in the hospital. What was meant to be a temporary shelter quickly became his home—and his school.

Sadly, David was later orphaned at a young age. But even through such painful and challenging circumstances, he chose not to give up. Instead, he focused on his studies and embraced every opportunity with determination and humility. His dedication bore fruit when he received his national exam results, a moment that marked a turning point in his academic journey

From early on, David displayed a natural interest and talent in technology. He was the go-to person when someone’s phone, tablet, or laptop needed fixing. His desire to keep learning led him to begin volunteering in Tumaini’s computer department after high school. In no time, he became a trusted and highly valued member of the team.

David’s role expanded to include maintaining computer systems and networks, installing and updating software, and providing support to students during practical sessions. He readily offered tech help across departments, assisted staff personally, captured moments through photography, and tackled whatever needed doing—always with commitment, integrity, and a servant’s heart.

At one point, David left Tumaini to pursue a promise of support from relatives in Nairobi. Unfortunately, this promise turned out to be an exploitation. He was being used for cheap labour. When we found out, we reached out and invited him to return—not just to work with us again, but to continue pursuing his dreams.

Today, David is an integral part of the Tumaini team and is pursuing a college course in networking with Cisco. His story is one of restoration and resilience—a powerful reminder that hope, when nurtured, can grow into something that gives back.

“I am eager to continue contributing in any way possible, whether through remote work, sharing my experiences, or supporting upcoming projects that align with my skills and expertise. The support, guidance, and mentorship I have received from you and the entire Education for Life team have been instrumental in empowering me to chase my dreams. For this, I am eternally grateful.”

David’s life speaks volumes: restored lives give back. His journey from a hurting young boy to a builder of community is a testament to what love, faith, opportunity, and support can do. The images below are some of David’s works. Captured by his camera.
