In November 2000, we were handed just £5 (or $9 CAD) and told it was meant to feed the children. We used the £5 to buy beans and maize, while others contributed potatoes, water, and firewood so we could cook a meal of Kitheri. That first day, we served 50 children. Watching them line up for food moved us deeply. There were smiles and full bellies—but the children returned the next day.
From that moment, we began feeding 50 children every Wednesday. Over time, this number grew to several hundred each Wednesday, and eventually, to several hundred children being fed every weekday. Today we feed around 650 children each weekday.
We try to serve a balanced diet of Kitheri (Beans and Maize), Rice and Vegetables and on a Thursday – Eggs and Rice, which is everyone’s favourite meal. Each child in the school receives lunch, ensuring they have the nutrition needed to focus on their education.
