There was a lot of excitement yesterday evening as our container from Canada finally arrived after over 4 months! It was a little tight manoeuvring the lorry and trailer into position but eventually the container was inside Tumaini. We then noticed the tyres of the lorry making quite a dent in the sand so tried to move the lorry, yes you guessed it – stuck in the sand and no crane available to lift the container from the lorry. They said don’t worry we will unload, tie it to a tree and swing it off!

So 7am this morning we started to unload, Jane set up a temporary office inside the container to record everything that was taken out and where it was to be stored. It was a lot of hard work and very hot inside the container but by 10.30 it was empty! Next came the tricky part, removing the container from the lorry, repositioning it and reloading it with the playground equipment.

In the end we decided not to swing the container from a tree and managed to get a fork lift truck, it was quite a job but eventually it was in place and by 2pm all the playground equipment was back inside.

So guys we just need you to come back to assemble it! A huge thank you to everyone who gave to the container and spent time planning and loading it and a big thank you to Emmanuel Foundation, Alberta. Thanks for all your prayers and support, we are very happy and looking forward to seeing the playground take shape.

Stepping Stone

Friday, April 15th, 2011

The rain is holding off in Mombasa and it’s very hot and humid here; but at least it’s allowing us to make good progress. We have now completed two sides of the outer walls with rough cast and are doing well on the back wall.

The toilets/showers are almost finished, but when we went to connect the pump we found our well was dry so tomorrow we’ll dig it a little deeper. We are making and fitting doors at a good pace now, last week our after school carpentry club finished making a door. It’s great to see students getting involved and learning a new skill.

Thanks for checking in on us. Xx Glyn & Jane

Smile

Friday, April 8th, 2011

Yes it’s a Colgate Smile. Thanks Colgate & Palmolive for visiting us this week and giving a very informative talk on Health & Hygiene. At the end of the talk all our Primary School children were given a toothbrush and toothpaste, as you can see they were very excited and happy.

“Stepping Stone” is progressing well, this week we have continued to work on the outside painting as well as putting up mosquito netting on the windows and finishing the toilet/shower rooms. We are almost there, but I think you will have to wait until next week for some photos!

Have a great week. Xx Glyn & Jane

Well done! You’ve been very patient for a couple of weeks now waiting for these updated photos – it was worth the wait, the place is beautiful!

The inside is almost finished, we are putting the finishing touches on the toilet/shower rooms and our carpenter, along with his students are busy making doors. We hope to fit at least 10 doors next week.

As you can see we have some excellent scaffolding erected and have started spray painting the exterior with a special mix of sand, cement and paint colour. The next job will be to put mosquito netting and security grills on each window before the scaffolding is moved to another side of the house.

We are hoping to finish the whole project this month, before the rain comes.

Thanks again for checking in on us, look out for a special smile next week!!!
