There was a real excitement around the school compound as we pulled up in the the new school van. We have managed to replace our 20 year old van with a 2003 Nissan Caravan, it has a lovely 3.0 litre automatic diesel engine, it has air conditioning and is 4 wheel drive.

Imported vehicles from Japan arrive in Kenya without any seats (except the front ones!) You then have to take it to a specialist who will fit it out to your specification. We decided to go for a mix between a school bus and safari bus, which means we have the flexibility not only to carry staff and students on trips but have the option of taking them further afield to Tsavo East National Park and beyond. Many of our students and staff have never been able to see their wildlife close up, until now!

As soon as the vehicle has completed it’s first safari we will post some photos for you to see, unless you want to come yourself!!!

Have a great weekend. Xx Glyn & Jane

Roof Top View

Saturday, October 23rd, 2010

It was quite a climb to the roof using home made ladders but the view was worth it, the Indian Ocean on one side and Tumaini on the other. We have now finished concreting all the ring beams that form the structural strength for the building, so next week we once again start putting up the trappers and mkoko’s in preparation for laying the roof slab in a couple of weeks.

Thanks for your prayers for our Form 4 KCSE students who started their final exams on Thursday with English, Maths and Geography. Keep praying; they still have 3 weeks to go yet!

Thanks Xx Glyn & Janey

Going Up!

It’s been two weeks since we showed you some photos of the building project. The Trappers and Mkoko’s have been removed and we are very happy to say the building is still standing! The walls on the first floor are now at full height, so we are setting out the ring beam and concreting it as we go.

Hopefully by the end of next week we can start to re-set the Trappers and Mkoko’s ready for the roof slab.

Behind the scenes our carpenters have been busy making windows and door frames, next week we will update you on their progress.

Please pray for our Form 4 Students who will sit their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exams (KCSE) starting on Thursday next week. The Form 4 students have been studying an average of eight subjects for the last two years and most subjects have at least two examinations. The KCSE exams will be taking place for the next three weeks. Thanks Xx Glyn & Jane

Invitation to Dinner!

Friday, October 8th, 2010

Students from the Form 1 and Form 2 Home Science classes invited members of staff to dinner; and what a great event it was. The dinner took place on two evenings and together with 10 other members of staff Glyn and Jane were invited to the second evening.

Students worked together in groups of 4; members of the Form 1 class were very artistic they drew some curtains on the blackboard with `Good Appetite’ written in 4 different languages! Tables were laid with table cloths, place mats, cutlery, juice and flowers and some tables even had beautifully decorated menu cards.

“We were greeted by our host and shown to our tables; our hands were washed and then we were ready to be served. Each table was served a different meal; we ate mashed potato with grated carrots mixed together, chicken stew with onions, tomatoes, herbs and spices and green vegetables. The meal was delicious! Our host sat with us and we questioned him about how each dish was prepared and when we finished eating we were given a questionnaire about the whole experience; the look and taste of the food; the layout of the room and tables, our hosts and any other general comments we wished to make.”

“Thank you Home Science students and Madam Beatrice – it really was great!”

The Big Picture

Friday, October 1st, 2010

Our building work is progressing well and walls are growing higher, but this week we thought we’d tell you more exciting stories of life here at Tumaini.

During the school holidays we had a team of volunteers from Christ Church Southborough who came to run a Holiday Club, entitled The Big Picture. Over 300 children turned up to hear the story from creation to resurrection in five days! Quite a challenge! Each morning started with some warm up exercises to “Jumping in the House of God” It didn’t take long to warm up with 300 children shouting at the top of their voices “Who’s in the House?”

After some songs and amazing multimedia presentaions by Gerald, Pat and the team; children could be found enjoying fun and games involving plenty of water, a parachute and footballs. Each afternoon the older youth attended our first ever Alpha course it was a great success and a lot of questions were asked and answered, thanks Gerald.

It was an amazing week of fun, laughter and great teaching. The week finished with the showing of an amazing DVD called “The Good Artist” So the only question now is when do we do it again?

See you soon Xx Glyn & Jane
