“Much loved, much missed” were the words on the screen at Martha’s memorial service yesterday at Tumaini Family Church. There were many tears as we celebrated a life well lived. The scripture reading was from 2 Timothy 4:1-8 which in summary says “I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me a crown of righteousness”
Martha was one of the original 4 ladies who started Mama Sema with Jane in 2000; she regularly came to our Tuesday night Bible Studies and sang joyfully as she helped us clean and move into our new home in the same year. A few years later Martha graduated from “School of Faith” she was an excellent writer, great teacher of the Bible and with amazing insight into scripture, it was lovely to read her essays.
When Tumaini was opened and Martha joined us everyone wanted her in their department because she was such a hard worker with a great reputation for being trustworthy and honest. What she said she would do, she did and to the best of her ability. You could always hear Martha laughing and chatting around the place and when you saw her, she was always busy doing something, or helping some one. No job too big, or too small – she would do anything.
Martha had a great sense of humour and a particular story springs to mind of a time during ladies exercise class after work as Martha laughed, almost uncontrollably, as she lay on her back trying to do sit ups. She was generous to everyone; you could often hear children passing by shouting “Mama Dan, saidia maji” (help me with water). She was a humble lady who endured hardship without complaining and showed her faith by what she did, she was a great worship leader and singer and was always there helping to sweep and set up the Church. See for yourself as she leads worship at Mama Sema
She showed her partnership and love for Timbwani, Education for Life and her son Dan by her careful planning – nothing was ever wasted. Even in her suffering, she taught us to stand firm and to think about the living.
Martha – wonderful mother, great encourager, friend to everybody, friend of God. You will always be loved and never forgotten!
Thanks to everyone who supported us and Martha through this difficult time, may God bless you.
